The gamble of baccarat may seem quite simple, as its rules are very clear: bet on the Player or the Banker and await for your hand to win. But if you delve into the seasoned players’ playing strategies and rules, you’ll find that the game isn’t that simple. Some people try to predict the baccarat hand based on their previous results, while some other players try to resort to complicated betting systems.

The meaning of cards in baccarat
The English word baccarat has no “t” in its name, but that’s not the most amusing fact about the game. What is very interesting is that its name translates to “zero” or “nothing”. This would also explain why all the Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings have a zero score in Baccarat. Deuces are valued at 1, and all other members of the hand are valued between 2 and 9. The total value of the hand can be as high as 9.
If the value of the card exceeds 9, 10 points are subtracted from it. If you are dealt cards with a value of 4 – 9 – 5, for an example, your hand total is 8 or 18 minus 10. Two 10s add up to 0. If you have a total of 8 or 9, your hand is deemed natural.
Player Hand
The primary action in baccarat is always taken toward the Player’s Hand. The Gambler is dealt two cards, which are then reversed by the Dealer. If their total varies from 0 to 5, a 3rd card is dealt. If the total sum of their points ranges from 6 to 9, then the Player stands, that is, does not received additional cards.
A hand with a total sum of points between 8 and 9 is deemed a natural hand. With it, the player automatically wins and beats any Banker’s hand. The exemption is only if the Banker’s hand also has 8 to 9 points. If the Player has 8 and the Banker has 9, the Banker’s bet wins, and vice versa. The casino’s share of play for the Player is 1.24% and the payout ratio is 1:1.
The Banker’s Hand
The Hand of the Banker also takes two cards each. If the Banker has 7, 8 or 9 points, the third complementary card is no longer dealt. This is true, though, only if the first two cards have a combined value of 0 and 3, and if the Banker has a 3 and the Player has an 8. The Player may still score a total of 4, 5, or 6, according to the Player’s score. Fortunately, you don’t have to keep all these subtleties in mind, as the Dealer is in charge of your moves.
